Pricing Research: Test the Offer, Not Just the Number

Pricing research examines how customers evaluate a defined offer at different prices and against realistic alternatives. It supports a business decision but does not reveal one permanently optimal number. Product, quantity, service, channel and timing can all change what the price means.

A useful plan combines customer evidence with the company’s costs and operating constraints. Cost-based, competitor-informed and value-oriented approaches answer different questions. None should be treated as a guarantee of demand or a substitute for a coherent product offer.

Pricing Research: Test the Offer, Not Just the Number
Illustrative question framework • INTAGE Vietnam

Define the complete purchase

State the product version, pack size, included service, payment and relevant fees. A price for one item and a price requiring a bundle are different propositions. If a trial or subscription is involved, show what happens after the introductory period.

For a hypothetical refill product, keep the total payment and quantity visible alongside unit price. A customer may recognise the unit saving but lack storage or prefer a smaller commitment. That trade-off is part of the price decision, not an error to remove from the analysis.

Use alternatives customers would actually consider

Include the current product, another plausible solution and the option not to buy where relevant. Asking whether a product is worth its price without a credible context can overstate appeal. Do not assume that the nearest-looking competitor is the only alternative.

Start with exploratory work if the value proposition or language is unclear. Then test a defined concept consistently. If the concept changes while the price changes, the result cannot isolate the effect of price alone.

Choose the test around the decision

A study can show different prices to comparable groups, examine choices among offers or explore how people interpret a price range. Select the approach according to the question, audience and available sample. Explain what participants saw and what response was measured.

Repeatedly asking the same person about many prices can make the exercise unlike ordinary shopping. Randomisation, order and context need attention. Stated purchase interest should be reported as stated interest, not relabelled as a guaranteed sales forecast.

Connect demand evidence with commercial constraints

A price customers like may not support the cost of providing the offer. Conversely, a cost-plus calculation does not establish that customers see sufficient value. Review product cost, channel terms, delivery, returns and support using consistent definitions.

Premium or entry positioning needs a clear reason in the offer. A high price alone does not prove distinction, and a low introductory price does not establish repeat demand at the ordinary rate. Consider the intended time horizon and how the change affects existing customers.

Validate the result under bounded real conditions

Where feasible, use a limited commercial test to examine completed purchases, product mix, returns and repeat behaviour. State the audience, period, availability and promotion conditions. A stock problem or a different traffic source can obscure the interpretation.

Review revenue and relevant contribution rather than volume alone. Set the decision rule before testing and retain uncertainty in the recommendation. Do not infer a stable price response across all regions or segments from a small convenient sample.

For method planning, review qualitative and quantitative research. Explore market research services and contact INTAGE Vietnam with the offer and pricing decision. The useful result explains the trade-offs, limits and evidence behind the proposed strategy.
